Walk 2 - Speltham Down Viewpoint

Speltham Down Viewpoint Walk

Length: 1 mile

This route gives the walker a superb view of the village spread out below, especially the Norman Manor House and the church on the opposite side of the valley.   The smaller tower that can be seen near the church is a folly.

From the People's Market turn into Speltham Hill alongside the shop, and at the bend in the road go through the kissing gate on the right into Speltham Down. Follow the path straight ahead to a kissing gate beside the left-hand of the two gates. Go through the gate and left up the hill, passing the Jubilee seat. Another gate leads onto a path between two fences. When the path emerges into a field, turn sharp left through a gap. Follow the path to the road, then turn left.  In a short distance, turn left again onto another footpath. Cross the field and head downhill to the viewpoint, with a seat for you to sit and contemplate. The way back lies down the very steep slope towards the kissing gate where you began - take care, and find a zigzag route down. Alternatively you could retrace your steps.
