Walk 3 - Speltham Down and Church

Speltham Down and Church Walk

Length: 2 miles

From the People's Market turn into Speltham Hill alongside the shop, and at the bend in the road go through the gate on the right by the National Trust sign. Keep straight ahead to the kissing gate, go through this and continue on the path on the level. Look out for birds of prey such as a kestrel hovering, or a buzzard soaring overhead. At the stile, turn right to another kissing gate, and onto a path which emerges into West Street. Turn right along the pavement, and at the road junction cross over by the bollards and continue ahead (don't turn right) past a converted barn and the Methodist Chapel. Turn right into a small housing estate called Stewart's Green, cross the green and look for the footpath ahead between two houses. Cross the field, and on reaching a high wall, go through an iron gate and on to the churchyard. Turn right downhill. The church is well worth a look round and has a beautiful interior. It is mainly 13th century enlarged from the original Saxon church.

Go downhill past the church and an old yew tree to the road. This is the High Street, which used to have many shops. Note Langtry's, the former butcher's. Your start point is in front of you.
